Provides mammography services to patients while adhering to department and organizational policies, procedures and standards.



  • Routinely provides mammography exams and special procedures by operating imaging equipment and other equipment/devices as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates the ability to operate mammography and biopsy equipment properly.  To include technical factors and rate of compression.
  • Follows established protocols for specific exam. Practices sterile techniques as necessary.
  • Evaluates diagnostic images for technical quality, seeks advice when necessary.
  • Understands film interpretation and requests for additional views and/or follow-up care.
  • Demonstrates ability to troubleshoot equipment and determine if service engineer is needed.
  • Demonstrates the ability to educate the patient and family on the procedure to be performed and address all patient concerns regarding procedure.
  • Successfully performs routine exams and views as well as specialty views as requested per radiologist.
  • Complies with all state and federal regulations related to mammography.
  • Adheres to all guidelines as determined by the ACR with respect to:  patient positioning; QC tests; film quality; film repeat rate – with the goal if providing consistent optimal mammographic studies.
  • Maintains current knowledge of new techniques and practices.
  • Acquires and documents appropriate CEU’s in mammography and diagnostic radiology as required for continuing education by the State and professional licensing boards.
  • Maintains CPR certification.
  • Maintains good patient and employee radiation safety practices that are in compliance with ALARA and the standards set by the State of MA.
  • Wears radiation monitoring devices at all times and leaves in department when not working.
  • Properly shields all patients when appropriate. Technologist will at no time hold patients during exposure.
  • Questions and documents response of all females regarding possible pregnancy.  Takes appropriate steps when patient is unsure of pregnancy.
  • Properly shields individuals other than patients who remain in the room during the exam.
  • Maintains professional and appropriate patient interaction skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to educate the patient regarding breast cancer and its prevention to include BSE.
  • Assumes care for physical and psychological needs of the patient during routine exams and special procedures.
  • Respects patient confidentiality regarding written and verbal information.
  • Assures patient ID before beginning the exam/procedure.
  • Initiates lift support and activate a “code” when necessary.
  • Maintains good inter/intra departmental communications.
  • Works as a team player with other employees and MD’s.
  • Is positive, professional and respectful in all interactions.
  • Reports on supply shelf levels where appropriate.
  • Demonstrates efficient and thorough follow-through on assigned duties, communicates feedback when necessary.
  • Maintains appropriate patient records and assists in all support/clerical procedures as required.
  • Utilizes appropriate patient charges and exam codes.
  • Assures complete patient information for MD interpretation of exam.
  • Obtains outside films where appropriate to follow proper department procedure.
  • Obtains and updates complete patient history and indication for current exam.
  • Prepares films and x-ray records as required by department.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of computer functions to include all screens pertinent to work area.
  • Documents and reviews cases for follow-up procedures where appropriate. 
  • Has working knowledge of department and hospital/clinic policies and procedures.
  • Accommodates changes in schedules to meet the needs of patients and the dept.
  • Complies with health and safety requirements and with regulatory agencies such as DPH, etc.
  • Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through educational programs, seminars, etc. 
  • Attends a variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
  • Regular, reliable and predicable attendance is required.


  • Graduate of a two year program in an AMA accredited school of Radiologic Technology.


  • Registered for ARRT and licensed in the State of MA.  


  • Advanced  registration  in mammography.


  • Current CPR certification.


  • Minimum of one year experience in Radiology. 


  • Minimum of one year mammography experience in supervised site. 


  • Minimum of two years mammography experience in unsupervised site.


  • Meets CEU requirements for ARRT, MA state and ACR.
